ChatGPT vs. Perplexity vs. Google AI Overviews: How Each One Decides What to Cite

No. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot each retrieve information differently, weigh different signals, and cite sources at very different rates. A page that gets cited constantly in Perplexity may never appear in ChatGPT, and a business ranking on page one of Google may be invisible in an AI Overview for the same search.

That is not a technicality. It changes what "getting found by AI" actually requires, and it means a single tactic will not work the same way everywhere.


The Five Platforms Are Not Running the Same Playbook

Each platform is built on a different retrieval system, so being visible in one says very little about being visible in another. Some lean on a licensed search index. Some run their own crawler and build their own index from scratch. Some do not reliably search the live web at all.

ChatGPT's web search draws on a mix of services, one of which OpenAI's own VP of Engineering, Srinivas Narayanan, described plainly in a Reddit AMA: "We use a set of services and Bing is an important one," when asked whether ChatGPT Search still relies on Bing behind the scenes (Search Engine Journal). Perplexity, by contrast, runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, and its own index, and performs retrieval in real time for nearly every query (Perplexity Help Center). Google AI Overviews use the same Google Search index that powers regular results, with no separate ranking system layered on top (Google Search Central). Gemini's consumer app only reaches out to the live web for some questions, not all of them (Google Gemini Help). Microsoft Copilot in Bing blends the Bing index with live web results and generates a summarized answer on top (Bing Search Blog).

None of that is a minor implementation detail. It is the difference between "get indexed by Bing," "be crawlable by a bot most sites have never heard of," "do the SEO fundamentals you already know," and "accept that this platform might not check the live web for your query at all."

The differences in that table are not marketing spin. They come from what each company documents about its own product, and the citations throughout this piece link directly to that documentation.


Does Optimizing for One Platform Help With the Others?

Partly, but not reliably, and the honest answer depends on what "optimizing" means. General fundamentals, being crawlable, being clearly written, being structured with real headings, having consistent business information, help across every platform because every platform needs to be able to read and trust a page before it can cite it. What does not transfer well is the assumption that ranking well in one system predicts citation in another.

Ahrefs tested this directly, running roughly 15,000 long-tail queries through search engines and AI assistants and comparing whether the URLs each assistant cited also ranked in the underlying search results for the same query. The overlap was low and uneven across platforms. Only about 8 percent of ChatGPT's in-text citations and 6.1 percent of its reference citations matched a page in Google's top 10 for the same query. Perplexity showed the highest overlap of any assistant tested, at 28.6 percent, which tracks with Perplexity being built around live citation from the outset. Averaged across all the assistants Ahrefs tested, only about 12 percent of cited URLs also ranked in Google's top 10, and about 10 percent ranked in Bing's top 10. Roughly 80 percent of the cited sources in that combined dataset did not rank anywhere in Google for the original prompt at all (Ahrefs).

The practical takeaway: SEO fundamentals and AI visibility work overlap, but they are not the same project with two names. Ranking on page one of Google does not guarantee a citation anywhere else, and a page can be a favorite citation source for one assistant while being effectively invisible to another.


Why a Page Can Be Cited Without Ranking Anywhere

Because citation and ranking measure two different things. A search ranking reflects a page's position in a retrieval index built to answer a specific query as precisely as possible across millions of competing pages. A citation reflects whether a generative system, working from whatever it retrieved, decided a passage was clear, trustworthy, and quotable enough to include in a synthesized answer.

Those are related judgments, but they are not the same judgment, which is exactly what Ahrefs' overlap numbers above show: a page can be the single source an AI assistant quotes for a question and still not appear anywhere in that same query's organic search results. This is more common than most businesses expect, and it cuts both ways. A well-optimized, well-ranked page can go completely unquoted if it is hard to extract a clean answer from it. A smaller, less-optimized page can get cited constantly if it happens to state something clearly and directly in a form a model can lift and quote.

This is also why AI systems decide what to recommend using a different mix of signals than a traditional ranking algorithm, and why chasing a single number, whether that is a Google position or a sampled "ChatGPT rank," misses most of what is actually happening. How to Tell If Any of This Is Actually Working

Look at confirmed data, not sampled prompts. The most reliable signals are things that actually happened: AI referral traffic showing up in GA4 from sources like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and bing.com, and confirmed crawler activity from bots like OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot showing up in server logs. It is also worth setting realistic expectations about volume. Even when a page is cited, a citation does not automatically produce a click. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing behavior of roughly 900 U.S. adults across 68,879 Google searches in March 2025, including 12,593 that produced an AI summary. Visits where an AI summary appeared saw a traditional search result clicked only 8 percent of the time, compared to 15 percent of visits without one, and users clicked on the actual sources cited inside the AI summary in just 1 percent of visits (Pew Research Center). That data point is specific to Google's AI Overviews, but it is a useful reminder for every platform in this comparison: being cited is valuable for authority, trust, and future model training even when it does not send much direct traffic, and it should not be judged only by a click-through number that was never going to be large.

Common Questions About AI Citations

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

Neither exclusively. OpenAI's VP of Engineering described ChatGPT's web search as relying on "a set of services," with Bing as "an important one" among them, not the sole source (Search Engine Journal).

If I block AI crawlers, can I still get cited?

No. OpenAI's own developer documentation states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT's search answers, even though they may still appear as plain navigation links (OpenAI). The same logic applies to PerplexityBot and other retrieval crawlers: if the crawler responsible for a platform's citations cannot access a page, that page cannot be a source for that platform's answers. Why did a competitor get cited and not us?

There is rarely one clean answer. It could be crawlability, page structure, freshness, third-party authority signals, or simply that the model's retrieval step happened to pull their page and not yours for that specific prompt. None of the platforms publish a scoring formula, so this is diagnosable but not provable down to a single cause.

Is there one "AI SEO" strategy that works across all five platforms?

Not a single tactic, but there is a shared foundation: crawlable pages, clear and direct writing, consistent business information, and real third-party citations help across every platform in this comparison, even though each one weighs them differently. Does Google's AI Overview use different ranking rules than regular Search?

No. Google's own documentation states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews beyond the same helpful-content and technical SEO fundamentals that apply to regular Search results (Google Search Central).


The Bottom Line

Five different companies built five different systems, and they documented enough about how those systems work to show that "ranking in AI" is not one thing. ChatGPT leans partly on Bing. Perplexity crawls and indexes the web itself. Google AI Overviews use the same index and the same signals as regular Search. Gemini only reaches the live web sometimes. Copilot summarizes on top of Bing's index. Being cited by one says little about being cited by another, and a page can earn a citation without ever cracking a traditional ranking.

The fundamentals that hold up across all five are not secret: pages that can actually be crawled, content that states something clearly enough to be quoted, and a business identity that is consistent and verifiable wherever a model happens to look. That is the same work that has always underpinned good SEO. The difference now is that five separate systems are checking it, each in its own way.
